Ideas for Conversation Practice

Here is an ongoing list of two person situations I have made for conversation practice. I suggest using these ideas only if your group level is Upper Intermediate or higher. Most of the situations have been successful, but be wary of your group (some people may find the topic strange or inappropriate). I will add more situations when possible.

  • Have one student break up with the other student.
  • Have one student be a famous actor (Brad Pitt or Michael Jackson) and the other student be an adoring fan who asks for his or her autograph.
  • Have the students be siblings. One student smokes too much and the other advises that it’s bad for his or her health.
  • Have two students pretend they are roommates, but one of them is very messy. The student must tell the messy person that he or she needs to clean up.
  • Have one student be the parent and the other student be the son or daughter. The son or daughter has to tell the parent that he/she has a new significant other.
  • Have one student be a customer at a restaurant and the other student be the waiter. The customer must order food. You can also change this to a fast food restaurant.
  • The two students have just taken a test. One of the students knows he or she passed and that the other student didn’t pass. That student needs to tell the friend that he or she didn’t pass.
